No one can deny that the SEO landscape has been dramatically changed by AI models such as GPT-4, and there seems to be no question about the fact that this process will continue into the future. AI and the future of SEO is an especially significant topic to anyone who relies on digital marketing as businesses worldwide are forced to change their approach to creating and optimising content.
We’ve created this guide to help you navigate the world of SEO in the context of these ongoing changes. We’ll go over what the rise of AI means for the future of SEO, how exactly it’s impacting it, and what you can do to adapt.

Is SEO Dead in 2025?
Recent changes in the SEO landscape have led to many questions: are AI-driven language learning models going to replace search engines like Google? Is human-created content irrelevant? They all seem to boil down to a single big question, one that every digital marketer has probably gotten tired of hearing: Is SEO dead in 2025?
Simply put: no, SEO is not dead in 2025. Despite having undergone many changes in an increasingly AI-driven landscape, SEO is still very much alive and kicking, and we’ll explain why.
For one, Google still dominates over 83% of all online searches. Despite competitors such as ChatGPT and social media platforms beginning to emerge, Google is still the main method of searching for information online and it doesn’t seem like this will change in the next few years, certainly not according to the titan’s constantly increasing market value.
What’s more, the platform is adapting by actively involving AI in search results, with AI overviews being a clear example of this. This demonstrates that the platform is committed to adapting the user search journey. It also shows that even though SEO might undergo significant changes, it is still relevant, perhaps now more than ever due to the new and improved strategies creators will need to maintain rankings.

Another aspect of why SEO continues to be essential for digital marketing in the age of AI is the fact that the way AI learns, develops and functions as a whole is dependent on high-quality user-generated content. Without it, LLMs like ChatGPT would have nothing to pull information from and reference. This means that original content does need to continue being posted and indexed by search engines in order for AI models to remain useful and relevant.
In fact, this is the case even according to AI itself. We decided to conduct a small experiment by asking ChatGPT whether it thinks tools such as itself will replace SEO agencies in future. You can see the answer for yourself:

The AI Impact on SEO
Growing Number of AI Users
AI platforms are gaining more and more users every day. Take ChatGPT for example: after acquiring a million users merely five days after launching, the platform is now hoping to reach 1 billion by the end of 2025. With over 5 billion visits per month, it currently ranks 8th in the world’s most visited websites!
As users are increasingly turning to AI platforms to search for information, questions arise as to what impact this could potentially have on Google’s market share and what it would mean for the future of SEO.

Optimising Search Engine Results
One significant aspect influencing discussions around AI and the future of SEO has to do with improving search results accuracy. AI-driven algorithms such as Google’s RankBrain, for example, use machine learning algorithms to interpret user intent more precisely. This means search results are not only dependent on mere keyword matches anymore, but also on what the meaning behind those words is most likely to be for the particular user. AI models determine this by detecting patterns and trends having to do with user behaviour, location, cultural context and so on, producing more relevant results.
AI Generated Content
At the start of the AI era, many businesses and professionals who create content on a regular basis resorted to AI generated content, producing articles, blogs and posts quicker and saving a lot of time and effort. However, as SERPs and social media platforms got flooded with a lot of content of similar (many would say ‘generic’) tone and style, user distrust with such pieces began to grow and it started to become clear that the ‘human touch’ in content creation still holds a lot of value. In fact, according to Forbes, 55% of users report feeling uncomfortable with AI-generated content!
What is more, according to recent trends, Google seems to have started prioritising content generated by actual users as opposed to AI-generated content. While Google doesn’t directly penalise AI-content, the platform’s focus on quality writing, genuine insights and original thought leadership often gives human-created blogs and articles an edge. This is mirrored by the rise in popularity of forum-based websites such as Reddit, which has seen an increase in users to about 1.1 billion as of January 2025 from 864.6 million in January 2024. Much of this growth has been attributed to Reddit’s increased visibility in Google search results.
How to Prepare for AI and the Future of SEO
The AI era may feel like a scary and uncertain time in the SEO world, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s a great moment to explore new strategies and approaches as you learn to navigate the changing landscape.
One important aspect of such a strategy would be the creation of original, user-centric content. Merely matching keywords is not enough to rank well any longer. Instead, you need to make sure you’re providing true value to the reader. Use tools such as PAA (People Also Ask) to discover what exactly your audience is searching for, and then address user concerns and queries directly, clearly and thoroughly.
This, however, is only one of the factors that you would need to consider when rethinking your SEO strategy in the face of an AI-dominated landscape. What’s more, the way AI is shaping user and search engine behaviour is constantly changing. Staying informed and continually updating your strategy is key.
